Independent reviews.
No fluff. No spin.

SMB Security Review exists because small business owners deserve honest, practical cybersecurity advice — not vendor-sponsored rankings or enterprise-focused reviews that ignore real SMB constraints.

Our mission

Why SMB Security Review exists

Most cybersecurity review sites are built for enterprise IT teams with dedicated security budgets and full-time staff. Small business owners — who often handle their own IT, have 5 to 50 employees, and need tools that just work — are an afterthought.

We built SMB Security Review to fill that gap. Every tool we review is evaluated through the lens of a real small business: Is it easy to set up without a dedicated IT team? Is the pricing fair at low device counts? Does it actually protect against the threats SMBs face — ransomware, phishing, credential theft — rather than nation-state APTs?

We test tools ourselves, on real environments, for at least 30 days before publishing a review. We don't accept payment for coverage, and we don't rank tools based on commission rates.

Our principles

How we work

Independent testing

We test every tool on our own devices and environments. No vendor demos, no pre-configured setups designed to impress.

Editorial independence

Affiliate relationships never influence our scores or recommendations. Tools are reviewed on merit, not on commission rates.

SMB-first perspective

We evaluate tools for teams of 1–50 people, with realistic budgets and no dedicated security staff. Enterprise-only features don't inflate our scores.

Regular updates

The cybersecurity landscape changes fast. We revisit and update our reviews quarterly to reflect new features, pricing changes, and emerging threats.

Our methodology

How we review tools

1

30-day hands-on testing

Every tool in our database has been installed and used on real devices for a minimum of 30 days. We test core functionality, edge cases, and real-world performance — not just feature lists from the vendor's website.

2

SMB-specific criteria

We evaluate tools on: ease of setup without IT support, pricing at 1–50 device/user scale, management overhead, customer support quality, GDPR compliance tooling (for EU businesses), and protection against the most common SMB threats.

3

Scoring and benchmarking

Tools are scored on a 5-point scale across multiple categories. We compare against direct competitors to ensure scores are meaningful in context — a 4.5 in endpoint security means something different than a 4.5 in backup.

4

Honest verdict

Every review includes a clear verdict on who the tool is right for and who should look elsewhere. We'd rather help you pick the right tool than push you toward the one that pays the highest commission.

How we fund this site

SMB Security Review is funded through affiliate marketing. When you click a link to a tool and make a purchase, we may earn a commission — at no extra cost to you.

What this means in practice

We are affiliates of NordPass, EaseUS, Surfshark, Malwarebytes, and Bitdefender. These relationships are managed through affiliate networks such as Commission Junction (CJ Affiliate). Reviews of other tools on this site are not affiliate relationships — we do not earn a commission from those links.

Our affiliate relationships do not determine which tools we review, how we score them, or what we recommend. If a tool scores poorly in our testing, we say so — regardless of whether we earn a commission from it.
