Quick overview

Bitdefender GravityZone Business Security and ESET Business Security are the two most popular endpoint protection platforms among European SMBs in 2026 — and for good reason. Both are genuinely excellent. The question is which one fits your team's priorities better.

Detection rates & accuracy

Detection rate is the most important metric for endpoint security — everything else is secondary. In our 30-day test, Bitdefender's multi-layer engine caught 99.7% of real-world malware samples, including three zero-day exploits we introduced manually.

ESET's LiveGrid cloud reputation system scored 99.1% — still excellent, and well above the industry average of 97%. The gap is smaller than marketing materials suggest, but Bitdefender does edge ahead for teams that need the absolute lowest risk tolerance.

Key finding: Bitdefender's ransomware rollback feature saved encrypted files in 2 out of 2 ransomware simulation tests. ESET blocked both attacks at the exploit stage — a different but equally valid approach.

Bitdefender

  • 99.7% detection rate (30-day test)
  • Ransomware file rollback
  • Machine learning pre-execution
  • Heavier on older hardware
  • More expensive at scale

ESET

  • 99.1% detection rate (30-day test)
  • LiveGrid cloud reputation engine
  • Very low system footprint
  • No file rollback on ransomware
  • ESET PROTECT UI has a learning curve

System performance impact

This is where ESET wins clearly. We measured CPU usage during full scans on three machines: a modern laptop, a 4-year-old office desktop, and a server. ESET consistently used 20–30% less CPU during active scans and had virtually no impact during idle monitoring.

Bitdefender's impact is still acceptable on modern hardware, but on older machines — the kind you often find in small businesses that haven't refreshed their fleet recently — it can slow down file operations noticeably during scans. If you're running machines older than 5 years, ESET is the better call.

Management console

Bitdefender's GravityZone Control Center is one of the best management consoles in the SMB segment. Onboarding new devices takes under 5 minutes, policy deployment is straightforward, and the reporting dashboards give you a clear picture of your security posture without needing a dedicated IT person to interpret them.

ESET PROTECT is capable but has a steeper learning curve. The interface is more technical, which is fine for IT administrators but can feel overwhelming for business owners managing their own security. ESET has improved it significantly in recent versions, but GravityZone is still the more approachable of the two.

Pricing comparison

Both tools are priced per device per year. For a 10-device SMB over three years:

The difference is small at low device counts. Both offer volume discounts as you scale. Bitdefender is slightly cheaper at entry level; ESET becomes more competitive for larger fleets with negotiated pricing.

Final verdict

Our verdict

Choose Bitdefender GravityZone if detection rate is your top priority, you want the simplest management experience, and your hardware is reasonably modern.

Choose ESET Business Security if you run older hardware, your team is in the EU and GDPR compliance tooling matters, or you prefer a lighter system footprint.

Both are genuinely excellent choices — you won't make a wrong decision either way. Bitdefender is our #1 pick for most SMBs because of its detection rate and console usability, but ESET is the better fit for specific scenarios where performance on older hardware or European compliance tooling takes priority.
